Happy Mother's Day

A happy Mother's Day, indeed. As I stood at the kitchen sink washing dishes from yesterday's party, I couldn't help but feel a warm satisfaction watching the children playing together in the backyard. Even the little Queen was glad to be out in the fresh air amused by her brother and sister's running games.

Naturally, I appreciated tremendously the Professor overseeing the kitchen apprentices in an early morning preparation of popovers and served fresh to me in bed. And, the new book was a wonderful surprise. But, it is the moments when the children are all gathered around while I read to them, the fun we had playing baseball in the front yard, watching them chase bubbles, seeing Firstborn in his surplice and cassock at Mass, and fun conversation at the dinner table that really make it memorable. One so appreciates the ordinary and treasures the beauty of the every day. This is it; these are the "good ole days."

We cannot appreciate a Mother's Day without giving special mention of our Heavenly Mother. Today at Mass, my children's choir sang Sing of Mary while the congregation was lead in a procession by a young girl of the congregation carrying a floral crown. At the end of the procession, the crown was placed carefully and lovingly on the head of the statue of the Blessed Mother. This custom of honoring our Heavenly Mother is long-standing and dearly held. I am glad that the girls of our parish do not have to climb a tall ladder to reach the Virgin's head as I did many years ago.

While the aforementioned Sing of Mary is a lovely Marian melody, I recently was introduced to this* gorgeous hymn and hope to teach it to the children's choir next May and to my own children yet this month.
