Where Firstborn is from

I am from cars, Brio, and paper.
I am from the house in Texas
where the earth smells good
and the fig tree grows
at the end of the yard.
(Large. Shady.
With sweet fruits hanging
from its branches.)
I am from the moon and freshly laid eggs.

I am from the Twelve Days of Christmas
and a sense of humor,
from Lyons, Whitmore,
and from my sisters-
Sunshine, Rosebud, and Little Queen.

I am from generosity
and hospitality,
from "Shut the door!"
and "not right now."

I am from rosary on Wednesday
and Mass on Sunday.
I am from Texas, Wisconsin
and the American Revolution,
from blueberry pancakes and homegrown figs.

From the time Dad slept
with us in the tent in the backyard,
the birth of my baby sister, Little Queen,
and learning to play cards with
Grandmama and Papa.

I am from my bookshelves,
from Redwall and Litte House on the Prairie,
from spring bluebonnet pictures.

I am from happiness and fun. I am from Home.

~Firstborn, age 9
