Fabric Garlands: Quaint and Charming

Inspired by my recent sewing class, I set out to complete another project I had been working on: fabric garlands. Alice of a number of things had suggested this project some time ago. I "visited" the Fat Quarter Shop she recommended to buy some charm packs. This quaint patriotic pack was on sale (still is!) and I knew immediately that we would be having and old fashioned decoration for our summer holidays this year. Like Alice, I started by ironing the fabrics in half:

I tried sewing them onto a narrow ribbon as she had done, but it was just too slippery for my ability. So, I spent some time with my companion, the seam ripper, and then selected a wider navy blue cotton twill tape to work with. This time, just to be safe, I pinned the the little penants onto the cotton ribbon and then began sewing.

One patriotic garland is complete with around twenty penants and one more is in the works. I also bought a pack of lovely florals and pastels to make into a girl's party garland. The possibilities seem endless and, best of all, they are easy to store and very re-useable.
