summer '08: local destinations

With a newborn and extraordinary gas prices in the mix, we have decided forgo our biennial summer roadtrip to the Midwest. And as much as I enjoy to roadtrip it, I must confess I really love "close-to-home" summers. This summer I am making a special effort to explore some sites of interest both in town and in the region. But I haven't I said that before? Well, this time I am making a list and setting dates. And, we have already begun...

Last month, The Prof took Firstborn and couple of his friends to the Big City to see a Houston Astros game in the Minute Maid Stadium. I had won the tickets in a fundraiser auction but was simply too pregnant to attend the game. So off they went and a great time was had by all!

And then, last Friday The Prof (God bless him) took all four elder children out to Small Town Central Texas for a peach picking expedition. I was sad to miss out on our annual family trip, but what a lovely day they had. Early morning peach and strawberry picking followed by a little small town shopping and lunch. Unfortunately there are no pictures of the day, but I did catch a shot as we began the processing last night. In the early days, this was a challenging task accomplished while trying to keep young children entertained but has beautifully evolved into a ritual the whole family anticipates and participates in with great revelry. Even our "adopted daughter" (the teenage neighbor girl) looks forward to joining in this team effort.

On my list for the summer is the goal of visiting all of the area farmers' markets. I have one to which I am loyal and love dearly, but I thought it might be interesting to take a little peak into the community life of the many other markets in our area. Tonight we went to the Mid-week Market in the central part of town. It was marked by the character so quintessential to our town: eclectic. It was a mini-market of sorts but with lots of variety. We didn't need much, really, but I enjoyed some spicy samosas tempered by smooth hummus and the children slurped down the silkiest icees ever made. We followed it by a trip to our favorite grocery store for a light dinner and lots of playtime on the playscape.
