If you haven't tried it yet, we would like to recommend a pleasurable, but simple past-time called letterboxing. Letterboxing is the 150 year old low-tech predecessor to Geo-caching. Essentially, there are hundreds of "boxes" (i.e. water-proof containers) carefully hidden all about North America by common letterboxing enthusiasists and the participants goal is to use clues to find them.
Simply visit the the Letterboxing North America website, search for your city or region and select a set of clues. When you head out, you will want to bring a simple compass (no declination is necessary), rubber stamp and a log book of your own. Once you locate the water-proof box, open it and find inside a rubber stamp, ink pad and log book. Stamp the book with your stamp and write a friendly message if you like and use the owner's trademark stamp to leave a record of your visit in your own log book--noting if you like, the location and date.
letterboxes in the same park and had a
great time with it. The boxes drew us a little distance from the path, required a bit of compass use, and included a literature discussion (the clues we followed had cleverly included a Little Women theme). All in all, virtually free, outdoor, wholesome family fun!
