This commandment comes directly from Ms. Rubin's list, but such sage words could not be omitted. I want to feel happy, joyful...I want to feel patient, compassionate, forgiving, interested or compelled. But how easily I indulge in that unruly feeling of discontentment, entertain distraction and am otherwise overtaken by selfishness and reactivity. Science and experience both show that it is much easier to control the way I act than the way I feel AND that feelings will follow action. That is, once I begin to act a certain way, the feelings-for better or worse-will shape themselves according to the actions.
